YMCA Hargis Pumpkin Patch, Chelsea, AL

Students from Chelsea and Shelby County High Schools spend many hours in "site-setup" preparing for children to attend the annual Halloween "Pumpkin Patch" at the YMCA Hargis Retreat. Students learned the importance of handling fragile merchandise, organization techniques, taking directions, and the value of hard work and diligence to "get the job done" by unloading thousands of pumpkins for the Pumpkin Patch event. 

Construction Education Foundation - Birmingham, AL

Students from Helena, Chelsea, and Oak Mountain High Schools toured the Construction Education Foundation of Alabama and learned about the Skill Trade Scholarship being offered to high school seniors.

Alabama Food Solutions,Childersburg, AL

Students from Vincent High School received community service and work experience hours by assembling boxes of food and taking them to cars at the Childersburg, Alabama, distribution center for Alabama Food Solutions. There are currently over 350 families receiving food assistance.

Heart of Dixie Railroad Station - Calera, AL

Students from Shelby County High School helped with the annual October Pumpkin Patch at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Station. They get experience working with "bosses" and the public at this month long event. In site preparation, students work with their hands by setting up tents, building a burlap and cornstalk maze, and decorate the train cars for the seasonal visitors. Every Thursday in October, our students will supervise and operate various activity stations in the park for the visiting children.

E&E Hardware, MT Laurel, AL

The hardware store is a new business in the town of Mt Laurel, Alabama.  Owner Casey Crane carries a variety of items: lawn and garden tools, hand tools, balls, kites, electrical and plumbing supplies. This site offers valuable small business operation work experience for our students. The one-on-one interaction with the owner allows them to learn to respect and appreciate the importance of responsibility, customer service, and the duties stocking merchandise.

At Lucky Dog Grooming & Boutique, students learn skills in taking directions and having initiative in this small business environment. Students support the pet groomers by keeping the site clean and orderly. They also learn to take direction and interact with the public and their "precious family members."

Cheeriodicals is a small business site in the town of MT Laurel, Alabama. Our students learn to appreciate the hard work and commitment it takes to operate and work in a small business. While here, students assemble orders for personalized gift boxes for specific situations. Students learn to take direction, work with a boss, the importance of fulfilling detailed orders, and meeting shipping requirements. Also, they are taught the joy of providing a bit of happiness to someone, "in a cool green gift box."
