Alabama disABILITY Conference- Montgomery, Al.



The 2017 Alabama disAbility Conference was held in Montgomery from Feb. 26th-28th. At least 350 people attended the conference that is designed to facilitate learning opportunities for self-advocates, families and professionals in the area of developmental disabilities There were guest speakers such as Dr. Ann Turnbill, Allison Barkoff, Genni Sassnet, and Mike Green as well as numerous break out sessions. The Legacy of Leadership luncheon wrapped up the conferenxce with many lawmakers attending. Organizers made a call to the lawmakers for funding. In Alabama, there are at least 121,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Currently, only 6,000 are being served with more than 3,200 on the waiting list for help.

University of Montevallo- Montevallo, AL

MHS students got to experience the lunchtime rush while working at the University of Montevallo's Anna Irvin Dining Hall. They helped set up the many stations, washed dishes, prepared coffee, stocked napkin dispensers, and cleaned tables.

Wash it Off Car Wash-Helena, AL



Alabama weather can be crazy but our Helena High School students are still busy with a steady stream of vehicles at Wash It Off Express car wash. 
They do the prep work before directing the customers into the "straight drive-in".


Vincent Volunteer Fire Station-Vincent,AL

We want to thank The Vincent Volunteer Fire Station and Fire Chief Smiley and Deputy Chief Youngblood for participating in our Work Instruction Program. Our Vincent High School student got a first hand view of how the department serves and protects the town of Vincent and surrounding areas. He also got the opportunity to assist in the daily activities of the station.

Shelby Humane Society- Columbiana, AL

Today not only did Helena and Shelby Co. High students work with the animals at the Shelby County Humane Society, but they were also trained on two new computer systems.  VicNet is the new scheduling program that will be used to request work days and job duties.  Vic Touch is the new time keeping program.


Publix Crow's Corner-Helena, AL

Students from Helena High School used the Job Application Center  to apply for a summer job at Publix today. The application process takes a minimum of 50 minutes and students should come prepared with all needed information.

Our Montevallo High School students were able to assemble several pieces of furniture today in the warehouse of the Alabama Furniture MarketAlabama Furniture Market is a a family-owned and operated business that strives daily to provide a unique shopping experience for its customers. The"open-air market" is comprised of a 35,000 square foot showroom and an equally large on-site warehouse.

YAiT Shelby County High School

It was great to see such a large turnout at Shelby County High School for their first Young Adults in Transition Club (YAiT) meeting.The students learned more about what YAiT is all about. They also provided feedback on what they would like to do as an official club at the school. We are so excited to see the students' make it their own!

 Our Calera High students helped Spoon & Ladle prepare over 500 containers that will go out to surrounding Birmingham, Alabama restaurants and grocery stores such as: iCantinaBeef O’Brady’sBob Sykes BarbequePiggly WigglyAndy’s Farm MarketMurphree’s Market & Garden Center; And Western Supermarket.

Revolve Restaurant-Birmingham,AL

Our Oak Mountain student assisted in the preparation/opening of Revolve Restaurant this morning. He does a fantastic job making sure everything looks "just right", and is always very meticulous in all assigned tasks including making the dining area look spotless, rolling silverware, and kitchen prep.

Our MHS students got to experience the lunchtime rush while working at the University of Montevallo's Anna Irvin Dining Hall. Today, over 200 middle and high school students as well as the U of M students kept them very busy setting up the many stations, preparing coffee, making pizzas, stocking, and cleaning.

Shelby County Humane Shelter- Columbiana, AL

The Shelby County and Helena High students assisted the staff at the Shelby County Humane Society today in making cat toys, walking dogs, and cleaning cages. You can find more information about volunteering and adoption of animals  at www.shelbyhumane.org
